A little bit about me…
Timothy W. Deaton-Conway (Tim) is an artist, performer, community builder, and proud Appalachian who has spent his life finding creative ways to tell stories and bring people together. Born and raised in the mountains of Eastern Kentucky, Tim's love for the arts began early and has never stopped growing. He studied Music and Theatre Education at Morehead State University before heading to New York City, where he pursued opportunities as a vocalist, actor, and dancer, performing in a variety of theatrical and operatic productions.
Even while living in New York, the mountains never left his heart. Eventually, they called him home, and Tim returned to Eastern Kentucky with a renewed sense of purpose and a deep appreciation for the culture, people, and traditions that shaped him.
Creativity remains at the center of everything Tim does. While many know him through his work in music and theatre, he is also a visual artist who enjoys working across a wide range of mediums. Whether painting, drawing, crafting, designing, or exploring new artistic techniques, he is constantly creating and finding inspiration in the beauty, history, and resilience of Appalachia. For Tim, art is more than a practice—it's a way of connecting with others, preserving stories, and expressing the things that words alone cannot capture.
Since becoming Executive Director of the Appalachian Arts Alliance in 2019, Tim has had the privilege of helping grow opportunities for artists and communities throughout the region. He has overseen the development of the ArtStation, navigated the organization through the challenges of the pandemic and devastating regional floods, and worked alongside countless artists, volunteers, and supporters to expand the impact of the arts across Eastern Kentucky. His greatest pride, however, comes from the relationships built along the way and the communities that continue to inspire the work.
At home in Rowdy, Kentucky, Tim shares life with his husband, Chad, and their son, Jake, on Chad's family's historic farm, established in 1856. Surrounded by rolling hills, family history, and the landscapes he loves, Tim finds daily inspiration for both his artwork and his community work. Whether on a stage, in a studio, or around a table with friends and neighbors, he remains committed to celebrating the creativity, culture, and enduring spirit of Appalachia.
